Fishing rigs

In this section we have put together some of the most commonly used rigs that we use off the kayak. Some
rigs may work better than others at times, this can be down to tide flow tangling the rig or it could be the snoods
on the rig are to short/long or the hooks are too big /small for the species you are trying to catch.
Rigs can be expensive if you are doing a lot of fishing, although the rigs you buy are well made, there
is nothing like making your own and catching with them, so in this section we have listed all the
components in the rig for you so you can make your own, and a list of some of the species that it is
possible to catch them

One up and one down rig

This is a down tide rig, this is an excellent rig for fishing two different baits close or far apart. As you can see I’ve used a zip slider for this diagram, this will give you an excellent bite detection as the fish does not have to lift the lead before you feel the fish on I like to use a French boom on the top hook (the flyer) is way I can vary how far off the bottom I want to fish, One of the best things about using the French boom is that you add another or take it off without having to re-rig.

Three hook boom

The best time to use this rig is if there is very little or no tide run, or you are on the drift, the idea of the booms are to present the bait away from your main line and they help to prevent any tangles. This rig can be very good when the fishing is a bit slow; you can put three different baits on at the side time giving you a greater chance of catching.

 Main body: 50lb
 Booms: 100mm to 200mm
 Hook size: 1 to 2/0.
 Snood length: 150mm to 200mm 10lb to 20lb.
 Swivel size: 10
 Beads: 5mm
 Crimps

Species: garfish, mackerel, whiting, Pollack, wrasse, bream, coalfish, bass, cod, pouting, poor cod, and a lot of the mini species.

The float rig

Not that many fishermen use this rig but it can out fish all other rigs on its day.
Its best used on neap tides when the tide is not running as fast as it would be on a spring tide, the reason for this is that you only use small leads under the float to keep the bait down. This can be deadly around rocks when fishing for wrasse and Pollack. You can also use this rig when fishing a live sand eel for bass and Pollack. I have even had a conger on this rig. I often use this on a second rod, so that I can fish the mid and higher water as you can move the stop knot up or down the main line to vary the depth that you are fishing.

Three hook flapper / two hook flapper

This rig is best used when there is some tide run that will keep the bait up and away from the main body. Like the boom version this rig lets you fish different bait at the same time when fishing is slow. It’s probably best to fish this rig down tide or mid water if you are at anchor.
